Current common and mainstream conceptualization, knowledge, language, and constructed of life and existence are based on confused and false experience, perception, conceptualization, and constructed of the existential world. And this brief and simplified discernment to elaborate and illustrate such. And the simplest and most comprehensive would be through examples of science and naturalness-spiritual development and practices such as: 

The words material and immaterial are basically the same. However, in general, immaterial is understood or expressed as non-material and non-physical rather than as non-observable, non-detecble, and sensible (or not yet) and usually conceptualized in philosophy such as "Mind Only", "Consciousness Only", "Awareness Only", "Idealism", and "Immaterialism", 'Life is a Dream", "Reality is an Illusion".

In ancient days, there were no possible and realistic realization nor conceptualization nor construct nor words nor language of existential being and becoming experience as expressed through the ages through metaphors such as "Beyond Imagination", "Beyond Conceptualization", "Beyond Constructed". and "Beyond Words". And as such, metaphors as previous mentioned, such as "Immaterial", "Mind Only", "Consciousness Only", "Awareness Only", "Idealism", and "Immaterialism" are used.

However, in reality and truth, the existential world is inherently physical and interictally material. Consciousness and awareness or mind only arose or emerged after self-realized and actualized of elements or material in proper non-dual being and becoming physical topology, structure, function, process, mechanism, and order Oneness of Wholeness as had discerned and illustrated in diverse ways over the years. And as had inspired, encouraged, and urged in diverse ways in diverse past discernments such as a most recent discernment and illustration such as is:

Logic (and Existential Experience and Scientific Empirical) Shows Abstract Thought Is an Immaterial Power - Local and Non-Local Existential Being and Becoming Solution and Universal Path Forward - Philosophy And Science Beyond The Macro World - EPISTEMOLOGY OF LIFE AND ONTOLOGY OF EXISTENCE FOUNDATION AND INSTITUTE

Realizing and Actualizing Heaven While Eliminating and Preventing Hell Locally, Non-Locally, and Universally - EPISTEMOLOGY OF LIFE AND ONTOLOGY OF EXISTENCE FOUNDATION AND INSTITUTE

As such, material science, in particularly those and areas that professed as materialist and physicalist or physical realism, such as scientists, need to be honest and true to such conviction, oneself, and scientific inquiry and truth. And resolutely and skillfully act on such declaration and goal in the pursuit of scientific inquiry and quest. life and existence, and nature of existential reality and truth.

While professed non-material idealist such as in philosophy and naturalness-spiritual of mind only, idealism, and immaterialism need to be realistic and pragmatic or also honest and true to oneself, naturalness-spiritual practices and truth, and the Dharma by also being part of and examining existential experience of essence and nature being and becoming parts of sum of parts of the Greater Whole locally, non-locally, and universally.

And as such need not conflict since all would share being and becoming existential experience, inspiration, aspiration, yearning, and common and greater good goal and mission since material and immaterial are inclusive and can be experienced. through fusion of objective and subjective local and non-local process of being and becoming as parts of sum of parts of the Greater Whole.

A complement simplistic way of saying is all need to be honest and true. And realistic to existence of being and becoming as parts of sum of parts of the Greater Whole. And explore the existential world and nature of reality as such or "Know Thyself".
